A commercial driver's license (CDL) is an important thing for commercial truck drivers to obtain. But the steps to getting a CDL can seem complex and confusing. Tri-County Truck & Equipment has created the following guide to help demystify the process.

1. Make Sure You Are Eligible

The first step in getting a CDL is ensuring that you meet the requirements. These include a minimum age and physical capabilities. Check the requirements found in the CDL testing manual and be sure to also look up any state-specific requirements.

2. Get A Permit

The next step is getting a Class A CDL permit. This involves passing multiple exams, which typically cover:

  • General knowledge
  • Air brakes
  • Combination vehicles

The manual that covers these topics can be found online or at the state's testing site.

In addition to passing the exams, you will need to prove you are medically qualified to get the permit and drive a commercial truck. Finally, your driving record for the past decade will be checked for major infractions.

3. Practice, Practice, Practice

After you get the Class A CDL permit, you are able to drive a commercial truck on public roads with a qualified CDL holder. Spend time practicing commercial truck driving skills with the qualified trainer. They are able to point out errors so that you can fix them before they become a bad habit or interfere with your ability to get a commercial driver's license.

4. Consider Additional Training Programs

Many CDL training programs exist to help individuals get ready for the tests. They review the information needed to pass the written exam and give hands-on training for the skill-based tests. This can help commercial truck drivers learn the material and skills faster and have a better chance of passing the test.

5. Get The Right Endorsements

There are different CDL endorsement options that you may need to (or want to) obtain. For example, there is a Hazardous Materials endorsement. Check the endorsements section in the CDL manual to find out more.

6. Pass The Skills Test

The last step is to pass the three-part driving exam. 

This will include: 

  • A pre-drive inspection
  • Basic control skills
  • A driving test at either a state CDL test site or approved third-party test site

You will need to drive the type of commercial truck that you are getting licensed for. Once you pass all three tests, you will get the license from the state. This may be given the day you passed or may be sent in the mail.
